Jaw Cooper , a painter and  sculptor, has a her very own style and she ‘s about to expose her amazing artwork at the Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles the 5th of April. So if you are lucky enough to be around that day, visit the show, meanwhile enjoy this little interview and don’t forget to visit her website (her sketches are beautiful!) or her blog. Enjoy!

How long have you been in the illustration industry and how did you start?

I started working while still in college for illustration- so I would guess about 7 years. I started with a variety of small freelance jobs- t-shirt graphics, tattoo designs, painting commissions, that kind of thing.

What’s your background?

Professionally I am an illustrator and gallery artist. Personally I am a world traveler and lover of hiking and english muffins.

How would you define your style?

Feral girls and furious animals.

What’s are your influence?

Curio cabinets, fashion photography, forms found in nature, and anything alien, bizarre, or flawed.

How do you get inspire? How do you feed your creativity?

I make playlists of music to work to, and I make lists of words- colors/motifs/emotive words/etc- to synthesize my ideas.

How do you work? Do you have a routine that you like to follow?

I make lists, then I gather reference and start sketching. When I get something I like I transfer it to heavyweight paper and mount the paper to board and then I paint it, usually with waterproof india ink and gouache.

Do you allow yourself time for your personal project on a regular basis or only when you can? And why?

I frequently take time away from freelancing to work on personal work. I think personal work enriches your commercial work, and commercial work pushes you out of your comfort zone which improves your personal work.

Best and worst things of being an illustrator?

Best: Being able to make a living doing something you are passionate about. Worst: Having your self-worth inextricable from the quality of the work you are producing at the moment.

Favourite material to draw:

To draw with? Colorase pencil in carmine red.

Your favourite place to work:

At my desk overlooking Spring St in downtown L.A.

What project are you actually working on?

I’m freelancing at various motion and print companies around LA and wrapping up the loose ends on this upcoming show “Laid bare” at La Luz de Jesus Gallery.

Your favourite artists:

Hokusai, Hiroshige, Sargent, Leyendecker, Haeckel, Audubon, Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen and Chéret.

And finally, one tips or advice for those who want to work in this industry:

Work hard on your craft so that your skills are competitive and and live richly so you have something to say with your work.
